Jubilee Debt Campaign News and Action Update January 2008
Dear campaigner,
This May it will be ten years since 70,000 people formed a human chain around the G8 in Birmingham and demanded that rich countries drop the debt. We'll be marking this anniversary with two major campaigning events, to celebrate what we have achieved, and keep the pressure on politicians to finish the job - see below for details.
We hope you'll put these events in your diaries now, and get involved as the year progresses. We need your help to get politicians moving on the unfinished business of the debt campaign.
With best wishes, Jubilee Debt Campaign

DROP THE DEBT FAST: 12 APRIL-18 MAY
In the run-up to Journey to Justice, we will be holding a 36-day rolling fast to highlight 36 poor countries which still urgently need debt cancellation.
The fast will begin as the World Bank and International Monetary Fund hold their Spring Meetings in Washington, and end on Sunday 18 May when we mark the 10th anniversary of the Birmingham G8 human chain. Each day we will focus on one country that urgently needs the chains of unpayable and unjust debts to be broken.
Join the fast for a day or more in your community. Further details will appear on our website when confirmed - for now, mark the dates in your diary

GAMBIA GETS DEBT CANCELLATION
After seven years, Gambia has at last completed the international debt cancellation process. The West African country, where 60% of the population live on less than 1 dollar a day, will initially see around $140 million of its debts wiped out, with $374 million to follow - meaning that over three quarters of its debt burden will have been cancelled.
