News Update May/June 2008

A wet half term is giving me an opportunity to update you with our news and have another practice on my computer skills! On the May Day Bank Holiday we attended the WEC Open day near Gerrards Cross, Bucks and manned a Kairos information stand in the Global Village marquee. This gave opportunity to meet with Dick and Flora Davies, Kairos facilitators and trainers at WEC. We also made several new contacts for potential courses in the UK including a Brazilian church in Canning Town, London. The latter resulting in an animated conversation in Portuguese and Brazilian hugs for some culturally homesick Brazilians visiting the exhibition.

In early May, Jan was the Head Facilitator for an intensive 5 day Kairos course near Windsor as part of the Big Year course of River Church. This was a welcome opportunity to facilitate the course in English and helped to further develop her skills in training three new facilitators.

 

In August, Cesar and Nubia will also be attending the wedding of a couple from their church in Rio, – Iona and Wagner (left) will be married from her parent’s home. They have become good friends of ours, taking part in a Kairos course in Rio, December last year. We are delighted we can also join the celebrations in Yorkshire.

 

Later in August we are planning some Kairos course tasters with contact churches in Portugal. Another opportunity to use the Portuguese translation of the course.

 

We plan to travel to Brazil on September 14/15^th to begin a 3 month stay working with churches in Goiania and Rio- training more facilitators and a national team with courses extending over a six week period to make them more accessible to participants with full time jobs. We will also be making arrangements to be there for about eight months in every year- in blocks of four months there and two months here (during holiday periods in Brazil and during this time in the UK Duncan hopes to continue marking exam papers and Jan may be able to pick up some supply teaching). We will need to set up a small rented apartment and buy a car. To realise this next stage we will probably require a base in Brazil for a further two years.
