A Smooth Flight and a Safe Landing

DSCF0817A sunny morning on June 9th saw The Pie & Pint Club gather for their outing to the Museum of Army Flying at Middle Wallop.

With everyone safely seated in the minibus or extra cars, and the wheel chairs carefully stowed, a pleasant drive to Middle Wallop delivered us to the Museum. We were welcomed with an introductory film on “Flying Soldiers” illustrating the training and tasks of the army fliers. A short tour of part of the Museum followed, with the chance to observe the many displays, from balloons at Farnborough to helicopters in the Falklands, and with most interesting information on the early days of the Royal Flying Corps   and “Operation Market Garden”- the Battle for Arnhem.

In true Pie and Pint tradition, a drink and a very hearty lunch were arranged in the
“Apache” Restaurant of the Museum. The broad windows and the bright weather allowed   everyone to watch the flying on the neighbouring airfield, where the army pilots were practising their skills. The manoeuvres of the helicopters were breathtaking, and a splendid accompaniment to the meal and to the conversations and memories exchanged around the table.

The Museum has a collection of historic aircraft, plus a replica 1940’s house, models and displays. To many of the group, these brought back memories of their military service, and of the rationing and air raids of World War 2. Some bizarre prototype aircraft were on show, and the gliders used to fly soldiers to combat zones reminded us of the dangers and heroism involved.

By mid-afternoon, a stimulated , but slightly weary group prepared to return to Farnham, with thanks to the Museum for their help and hospitality. There was not even a traffic jam to delay our journey home.
Many thanks are due to Brian Kurton for his skilful piloting of the minibus, to the Farnham Lions for their support and Roger and Peter for driving the extra cars.

Please continue to remember the Pie and Pint Club in your prayers!

 Full Time at Rowledge

September is going to be all change for me as I leave FCCT youth team and go full-time at Rowledge. At the end of this academic year, I will have been with FCCT for 6 years. I started in 2002 working with St James' for 3 days and FCCT children's/youth team for 2 days. Since day 1 I have always had a strong sense of calling to the more rural, parish side of youth work, which resulted in me doing 8 hours only for the youth team over the last few years and now finally to being full time
at Rowledge.

I have always appreciated and valued everything that FCCT stands for and in no way will this be 'au revoir!' I will still be supported in many ways by the Trust and am very grateful for the Trustees allowing me to fulfill my calling to where I feel God wants me to be, and for all the support in helping Rowledge Parish have their own youth worker! When I told the youth team of my plans, I described my departure as being:  'formally' not working with them anymore but still being 'informally' part of them and their work. I love being part of an office environment where there are different people to chat to and bounce ideas off and being part of a youth team means lots of youth leaders to drew alongside for support. For these reasons I will still be in and around the office.

The timing of me leaving the youth team and moving full time to St James' is definitely in God's perfect timing and I am privileged to be part of His amazing plan!

Mission Trip Report

Their tiny thin faces were pressed up against the glass – their wide eyes mournfully gazing at their older brothers, sisters and cousins happily playing inside – making cards and having their hair braided by the few workers inside. You see, you have to be 11 to go to the club and they were as young as 4, left out in the early evening to fend for themselves. The older children at the club got annoyed at these importunate faces…. So they closed the curtain. A few seconds later their tiny noses were pressed against another window…..

Although I was meant to be helping inside my heart was outside. I tried to ignore them but in the end stole a sneaky glance in their direction. Instantly their eyes lit up in joy and hope – only for that joy to fade when I sadly turned my head away. After an hour I could stand it no longer. My body wandered outside to join my heart.

Instantly I was surrounded by happy smiling faces. “My name is Charlie and I am 5, when can I come to the club”? a little girl pleaded.

“You have to be 11 to come to this club” I replied

“Oh” said the tiny voice and started busily counting on her fingers “That means I can come in ……. Six weeks”.

“No” I replied, “that means you can come in six years”.

“Why don’t we play a game”? something in me suggested. Their faces were a picture! They chose musical statues and ran and stopped and smiled and jumped and cheered like children everywhere, but there was an unrestrained joy and lightness in them that I had only ever seen in Africa and India. As the evening drew on they drifted off to their homes – waving and smiling as they went, and I pondered the fact that I was not in the third world, I was in Wrecclesham………….

Name Withheld

PS If you would be interested in exploring the possibility of being part of a team to open a weekly club for Charlie and her friends please speak to Fiona Jackson on 721242.

Thank You Dave Hancock

Dave is the School Caretaker at Folly Hill Infant school, who kindly did a sponsored walk on behalf of FAST and raised over £400 for the Team. Also raising over £300 for the Cleaford Christian Trust to help a young girl who is suffering from Leukaemia.

Dave walked the Cotswold Way starting at Chipping Campden walking the 70 mile distance to Wootton-Under-Edge.

Dave’s walk is a story of courage and endurance, made especially more difficult as Dave knew that he was coming home to an operation, himself.

We have the full account available for anyone who would like to read it, please contact the office – a few memorable moments

‘….I’m left with my thoughts, thinking about seeing the Dali Lama last Thursday. He was talking about his vision for world peace, having compassion for each other is his first step. ….’

‘…. I have to clean my glasses again to glean information….When will someone invent windscreen wipers for glasses? …’

‘ …Stone Age man to the Romans long burrows and Roman villa ruins dot the landscape ….’ (on the road to Birdlip)

‘…. Climbing up to Cooper’s Hill, the scene of this year’s cheese rolling competition. …’

‘Down hill into Kings Stanley. I’m now feeling tired and according to the guide book it’s 7.2 miles to Dursley. I have to find a way to urge myself on. I think back to school and to a young boy in rainbow class. He gave his pocket money he had saved (£5) He wanted the children in Romania to have it. Bless him, what a kind gesture from one so young.’

As we are all very much aware the May half term week was very wet, adding to Dave’s discomfort. The driving wind and rain, very slippery conditions added to the challenge which Dave undertook on our behalf.

Dave finished his account feeling depressed because the weather had beaten him and he felt that he had let so many people down – NOT SO Dave – you allowed this reader to understand just how much you undertook - the courage, determination, the discomfort, the ups and downs – your narrative has been an inspiration – an emotional read which I would urge other people to read.

‘Now my next challenge is to recover completely from my operation, see you all very soon. Bye for now Dave.’

Dave we all have you in our prayers and hope to see you, cheerful as ever at Folly Hill School. Thank you so much for allowing us all to read your account you are truly an inspiration.
