Inspiring Minds - Definitely
On Wednesday 2nd July, the whole of Year 10 attended a special assembly on Apartheid in South Africa, presented by visitors from Capetown, who themselves were guests of Farnham Christian Community Trust.
The assembly was very thought provoking and included the personal stories of several people on both sides of the conflict that had flown all the way from South Africa to speak to us. The stories gave us an insight into the heart of Apartheid and showed us what could be accomplished by those pushed beyond the edge of reason. Tales of police shooting children because their parents were suspected of supporting a particular party and of thousands of people of different races marching in protest after decades of violence brought home to many, including myself, the reality of what happened and the fear that pervaded the southern part of the African continent until fairly recently; and is, to a lesser extent, still going on.

Four classes were also treated to a much more detailed explanation of life in South Africa at present, including pictures of the townships and the work Christian groups are doing there.
We were able to ask several questions and were amazed at some of the answers; a real eye-opener for most of us. The presentation was particularly well timed as Yr 10 have just finished a topic on ‘Christian responses to social injustice’ as part of our RS Philosophy and Ethics GCSE course.
Everyone found it a powerful and sometimes moving presentation and many expressions of appreciation were made including: “Thanks, I really learnt a lot”. “Very interesting to hear a real story first-hand”.
“Really courageous people with amazing experiences”.“I admire the work you do”. “Thank you, very informative and moving”.
“I found that so interesting”.

One to One Hand Over
For many Yvonne Bryant will not need any introductions, but in case you have not met yet, Yvonne is a member of the ASSIST Praise and Worship team and has a great deal of experience of working with the elderly, her background is in nursing. I’m delighted to say that she has agreed to take over from me as Coordinator of the ASSIST ‘One to One’ initiative as from 20th August 2008.
You may remember ‘One to One’ was originally set up by Jenny Schmit who saw the need for a ‘befriending’ service for the housebound elderly in Farnham. I took this over from Jenny in 2003, and it has been a tremendous privilege to have been involved in this initiative over the last five years. We have seen it grow and develop and I have met and been involved with so many wonderful elderly clients and volunteers of various ages, from 18 to 70ish!
At the ASSIST summer party in July we introduced one of our longest standing volunteers Jo Jones, to our newest recruit Hamish MacDonald, ‘One to One’ is a growing family.
I also received a beautiful surprise bouquet for which many thanks to everyone. I feel each volunteer should have one too as they are the ones who are so committed and work so hard to relieve the loneliness of many Farnham elderly folk.
We were able thank our Volunteers at the ‘One to One’ Summer Tea Party in the Lantern at St. Thomas’ church on 20 th August, (we seem always to be having parties, you know where to come for a good time!).
I am sorry to have to step aside, however church commitments have increased over the last couple of years and it is harder for me now to devote the time to ‘One to One’ which it merits. I am so pleased to hand over to Yvonne who many of us know well, who has a great heart for the job and who is also a volunteer in her own team!! I have enjoyed huge support from Jenny initially and then Brian with whom it has been a pleasure to work over the last 3 years. During this time we have seen ASSIST take off as a well recognised and respected initiative serving the over 60s in Farnham, under the FCCT umbrella, and I am happy to be carrying on albeit on a smaller scale with the ASSIST Bible study team.
Thanks from me and over to you Yvonne!

Please throw in our Direction.......
FAST is always on the look out for items which can be used to provide valuable resources for use in R.E. lessons in Primary schools in Farnham – we have to make resources in order to provide what pupils need ( it’s cheaper!) Please help us throwing anything you consider useful in our direction:
Old Cds , Puppets, Paper, Wool, Fabric
Craft materials, beads, thread
If you are interested in what we might do with the above – give us a ring, 01252 714414 or Email, Joan@fcct.org.uk
Dear Parents and Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles
Do you have children at School?
Do you know that a group of us pray every Monday morning during the school term for our children and grandchildren – and those children and teachers whom we know at schools in Farnham?
There are also groups that meet to pray for St Peter’s, Potter’s Gate, Hale County, and Bentley.
The Monday morning group meets at Weydon Christian Centre, Upper Way. from 9.00 – 9.45 am each Monday during the term.
If you are interested in joining any of these groups or forming one for your own school, please do get in touch with me Juliet, 01252 725392 or the FAST team at the offices 01252 714414.
Prayer is important and we know that children and teachers are very grateful for the support.

FAST Craft
Do you enjoy stamping, punching, cutting………?
No nothing violent, just crafting!
The Farnham Assemblies and Schools Team (FAST) are looking for people to help prepare resources for lessons.
FAST Craft is a weekly session where like minded people come together to prepare lesson resources – cutting out flowers, folding baskets, making book marks and much more.
FAST goes into almost every primary school in Farnham with exciting and stimulating R.E. lessons, we cannot afford to buy in the resources necessary to stimulate and excite, so we make them.
You don’t have to come every week.
Giggles are optional – but they usually happen anyway.
Refreshments, Scissors, glue, paper etc are provided.
We meet in the offices above Robert Dyas in Downing Street, Farnham.
If you would like to find out more – please contact Carol or Joan on 01252 714414 or Email - joan@fcct,org.uk
Feltmaking
A most stunning piece of art work has just been completed by Year 3 at St Polycarp’s Catholic Primary school under the guidance and leadership of a gifted Christian artist. Jane Llewellyn is a felt maker, she has been teaching the children how to make felt from beautifully coloured merino wools, in preparation for a wall hanging project to be made for the school. You may remember she also helped the children at Potters Gate School to make a beautiful felt wall hanging for their school foyer.
Following a very successful and rewarding visit to the Stations of the Cross at the Wintershall
Estate, the children worked in pairs to create dramatic collages of each of the Stations. Jane then worked with small groups of children to recreate those designs in felt.
By learning to mix and blend the fine wools and by incorporating delicate silk strands, the children engaged enthusiastically with their felt panels. The children were full of suggestions and worked fervently cutting, twisting and arranging the felts to their desired effect.
Jane is a most patient, calm and gentle teacher and manages to encourage even the quietest child to contribute to group work. Her colour blending knowledge and felt making experience is shared in the most uplifting way that it makes you feel privileged to be alongside her.
The fifteen Stations of the Cross were presented to the children, staff and Head teacher on 16th July. As we held up the children’s designs and the accompanying felt panels, everyone was absolutely thrilled. The intense colours, glistening silk, details of skies, flowers, trees and faces were astounding. Each panel measures approximately A2 size and will be hung as a focal point for the school. Each Station will be portable and can be used especially during Easter time as a contemplation of the Passion of Christ.
Jane is available for schools work, or can run workshops for adult groups. Some of her work is shown on the website for the Surrey Guild of Craftsmen. She charges a very reasonable daily rate inclusive of all materials. If you would like to book her or find out more, please contact either FAST on 01252 714414 – Joan@fcct.org.uk or contact Jane directly on 01428 605037 – Janeart@tiscali.co.uk.
