170 Mile Youth Cycle Challenge
Over the 11th-13th August, ten young lads from Farnham cycled a 170 mile round trip from Farnham – Portsmouth, around the Isle of Wight and then from Portsmouth back to Farnham in order to raise money for the local Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice. Supported by youth workers Chris Secker, Steve Delves and James Skinner from the Farnham Christian Community Trust and support vehicle driver Will Lanham-New from local mountain Biking & BMX Charity ‘Rezurgence’ the team of young lads all aged between 16-18 helped to plan and Organise the trip, each playing their part in helping to sort out the routes, camp site, sponsorship, travel and food etc.
On the second day, the cycle route took the group approx 65 miles around the Isle of Wight on a 9/10 difficulty route! The weather didn’t help much either with overcast showers loitering on the horizon for most of the day.
Before setting out on the challenge, the young people were all keen that the trip should be used as an opportunity to raise money for a worthy charity. It was unanimous amongst the lads that Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice should be that deserving
Charity. I’m pleased to be able to say that the amount of money raised by the team for Phyllis Tuckwell currently stands at just over £1200!
Quotes from members of the group:
“I had a great time, it made me want to cycle more, since the trip I’ve started to Cycle everywhere!’ – Erik Torgersen
“The hills were like mountains! By the end of the trip my quads felt like they were at the top of the car!” – Jack Shimield
"I am really glad I took part, it was very enjoyable and for a good cause, it was definitelworth all of the effort" - Ben Jeggo
The Team
Adults – Chris Secker, Steve Delves, James Skinner, Will Lanham-New
Young People – Andy Walsh, Ben Jeggo, Ben Finney, Dean Robertson, Dong Ming-Lou, Erik Torgersen, Freddie Nelson, Jack Rhodes, Jack Shimield, Sam Ridgers.

FAST is growing fast!
Last year was a very successful year for the FAST team, and already Christmas is fully booked! The phone keeps ringing – “Could you lead an assembly please on…? “Could you do lessons on…?” “Are you free on…?” The only thing stopping us from saying “Yes” to all these requests is people. We have a small band of regular volunteers who will turn their hands (or fingers, or feet) to most things, and a wider circle of volunteers who specialise in particular schools, assemblies, lessons or with the preparation of lessons. But we need more! We don’t mind if you can only do an occasional lesson or assembly. We don’t mind if you choose only to support us in your local school, and we don’t mind if you bring a friend along too. We don’t mind if all you would like to do is join our weekly “FAST craft” sessions, when over a cup of coffee and a biscuit or two, angels are made, flowers are cut out etc, and someone was heard to exclaim,
“…you are nearly as bad as the Supermarkets!!”
This was because we now need help to paint our wooden Easter eggs for Easter 2009!!
In case you are new to the FAST team, we go into primary schools in Farnham to lead assemblies and RE lessons. This supports the teachers, many of whom find presenting genuine Christian teaching a real challenge. Whilst Linda writes, prepares and usually leads the lessons, Maggie writes, prepares and usually leads the assemblies. Carol and others perform puppet shows, and Joan does all the hard work of organising all the craft resources, as well as the admin.
We need more volunteers to take part in the assemblies, to help with the craft in the lessons, to learn how to perform the puppets, to help prepare the materials and to generally be a part of this exciting project. If you have an occasional morning or afternoon to spare, and would like to know more, please contact
Carol at carol@fcct.org.uk or ring the office on 01252 714414 and ask to speak to one of the FAST team.

Pure Sport is looking for some extra people to be lifeguards at our monthly events. The Sports centre is running low at the moment as most of their current lifeguards have just left for university. If we don’t get anybody, we might have to close the pool down for an evening and that would leave me with a very big group of unhappy children – please don’t let this happen!
If you know anyone who would want to lifeguard or you yourself would want to could you get in touch with me and I will be able to chat to you more.

Youth Praise
The next YOUTH led service will take place at Rowledge, St James' on Sunday 19th October at 6.30pm. The theme is 'SHINE' and this service will embrace the dark, autumnal evening combined with the architectural surroundings of a traditional church, creating a suitable ambiance appropriate for the evening worship. Sarah Phillpot from Horsley, currently studying theology will be speaking. FISH youth band (or should I say orchestra as there are now 20 members!) will be playing, and the young people will be worshipping God through drama, dance and multi media. Please bring a torch with you. The service lasts just over an hour and will be followed by refreshments. Please contact Becca for more information on 07989 201563. It will be great to see you - especially if you enjoy worshipping in new ways and want to support today's young people!
