A New Youth Worker for

The Bourne Children and Youth Initiative

(The Bourne CYI)

I grew up in the Bourne and until 3 years ago I didn’t know what The Bourne CYI was! But since working with various youth workers in Farnham, I began to be aware of what it was and what it does.

I am also working with a charity in Farnham as a Youth Worker as part of Cohesion which is supported by FCCT. I have been involved with this for 8 years.

I started in the Bourne CYI by helping run one of the Clubs called “Double Decker’s” but after the club leader decided to leave I was asked to take it on so I now run it with a couple of volunteers who I couldn’t run the club with out.

When I found out that Kevin Milligan was leaving it was mentioned to me that maybe I should apply for his job. I had to think long and hard and at that point I didn’t think it was right for me. Then after I found out they were going to review what the role was to be I decided to apply and see what would happen. I did and I was asked to come for an interview. I have to say interviews scare me and I had to remember that I was applying for a job which I found exciting to do so that made me less scared. The interview went well and I was offered the job which I accepted otherwise I wouldn’t be writing this Article.

This is a big step for me but one I think which will be an amazing opportunity as it will help me to become more experienced and more confident as I undertake new responsibilities.

The things I am involved with at the CYI are running 4 clubs throughout the week all for different age groups from 8 - 21.

I am in charge of publicity, so I’m producing a newsletter every month, updating the website, sorting out trips for different clubs and general admin. I am also going into schools/colleges and promoting clubs and volunteering.
Also,in the New Year, I will be starting to train my young volunteers.

One big thing I have done is to do some fundraising for Children in Need by being put in the stocks and have wet sponges thrown at me! We raised £208.40.

If you are interested in volunteering or helping out with any of the things I have mentioned, please contact me on Nicola@cyi.org.uk
