gemsexp

We’ve had several fantastic girls evenings since our GEMS launch in September. We now have 70 girls on our books and are having great fun getting to know the core group. Januarys girls evening had a ‘doing’ section which was making ‘mobile phone gems’. This was thought up and assisted brilliantly by Avis Tshiamalenge. It went down a storm, the girls had great fun making ‘gems’ with different words such as ‘princess’ and ‘gorgeous’. Some made their own designs and some even made ones with the GEMS logo. At Christmas we took 25 girls to Winchester to go ice skating outside the cathedral and do a spot of Christmas shopping (see photos). In the coming year we have a trip to Soul Sista (see below), a Felt Making Workshop with a local artist and a weekend residential in June. Alongside this I’m currently doing some mentoring training with The Source in Aldershot with the hope of providing a mentoring scheme as part of GEMS for the future.

Our dates for girls evenings in 2009 are: 27th Feb, 27th March, 24th April, 22nd May and 17th July all 7.30-9.30pm at the Holy Family Church Hall on Alma Lane.

 Family Cookery Club Autumn 2008

Pilgrims Way Primary School

During autumn 2008 the FCCT were extremely generous in sponsoring a Family Cookery Club for parents and pupils from The Pilgrims’ Way Primary and Weydon Secondary Schools. A total of 14 participants thoroughly enjoyed the shared learning experience, as you will see from the testimonies below.

In order to facilitate the project we needed the skills of three major players, Anne Guinea and Nicky Hayes from Weydon Secondary School Food Technology Dept. and Andy Mathieson, a local chef introduced to the project by the FCCT. With the necessary provisions organised and purchased by myself, their contribution included, planning menus, delivering the classes and supporting parents and children with gaining cookery skills and nutritional knowledge.   Members of the families attending the course catered for brothers and sisters/ parents / carers who were back at home, so that it was a shared family experience. Each family received a home cookery file of recipes they had learned over the duration of the course.

We would especially like to thank Mr Winter, head teacher of Weydon Secondary School for facilitating the course by providing Food Technology areas out of school hours and making all the families feel very welcome.

The course ran for 6 weeks and was a huge success, with all families completing the course.
We are planning to repeat the course during 2009.   The success of the course was largely due to the supportive and positive attitudes of the facilitators involved.

 FAST Road Show

Coming to a church near you!

In November, Farnham Baptist Church very kindly allowed the FAST team in to perform a puppet show and give a short presentation on the work of the team. The puppet show was the story of Zacchaeus, which was loosely linked to the theme of the sermon. In between the two services members of the team talked to individuals about the work in schools, and some people expressed an interest in finding out more.

Forthcoming road show events are at St Thomas-on-the-Bourne on 1st February and at the United Reformed Church in Farnham on 8th February. Would you like the team to visit your church? If you think this may be a possibility, please get in touch with Carol on carol@fcct.org.uk to discuss dates.

Soul Sista

Soul Sista Trip: Sat 14th Feb 2009

We still have lots of places available on the Soul Sista Trip in a couple of weeks. This is a trip we have run successfully in the past inviting youth from other churches. This year it’s a special Soul Sista one-day conference as they’re being joined by RomanceAcademy to tackle the topic of sex and relationships!

Speakers will be covering topics* like ‘the God Sex Guide’, breaking bad habits, how to deal with things if you’ve gone too far, flirting, boundaries and self-esteem. It’s going to be a packed day as on top of all of that the girls will be spending time in small groups to really get to grips with what these issues mean for themselves, as well as having time in worship and ministry.

They’ll also have a thrift store, a pamper corner, smoothie bar and chocolate fountains, plus some new things like a graffiti wall and prayer area (and maybe a few other surprises too!). Pure Productions will also be coming to Soul Sista to share their performance of ‘Hold Me’ – a drama centered around three girls tackling the pressures of sex and relationships.

*Because of the topics they’ll be dealing with at this Soul Sista they’re  setting an age limit of 14 years.
Cost is £10 per person which includes transport from Farnham. A packed lunch and money for an evening meal will also be required.
We will be Leaving 9.30am and returning at 9.00pm.
Please contact me for further information or to place a booking.
