Duncan and Jan Weir
February 2009
Feb 3rd 2009
Hi everyone – as it is still snowing – adding to the 20cm of yesterday and all Surrey schools are closed for a second day, I decided today was a good day to write an update.
Our main news relates to Duncan’s health and thankfully we have good news. The Consultant at Frimley hospital eventually phoned Duncan after the coronary angiogram to say that the narrowing was in the diagonal - a branch of the LAD (lower anterior descending) and as such was not worth worrying about. The other disease was very minor, only 30% - in fact what would be expected in anyone his age. They only do surgery if there is about 70% disease. So no further hospital appointments etc. Excellent news! Duncan is on an increased dose of the cholesterol lowering medication and will be attending a Healthy Heart clinic at our local surgery. As you can imagine Duncan is feeling so much better! Thanks for all your prayer support.
Now we feel able to make some firmer plans for Brazil in March. We are planning to fly to Goiania on 4th March and will stay for 50 days – less than we’d originally planned but the extra health insurance premium for a longer trip is, quite frankly, just too expensive. We are hoping that Duncan’s condition will be stable so that the insurance will revert to a lower premium in October.
We will run a 5 day intensive Kairos course with JOCUM/YWAM workers at the Goiania base from 10- 14th March and a second 5 day course with YWAM’s DTS students 14-18th April.
(‘Ide’ ,on the picture, is ‘Go!’In Portuguese)
Four YWAM staff will help us facilitate the course and we are hoping that Pr Abidala from Victory Church will also be involved. These 2 courses will complete the training for 3 facilitators who will then be equipped to act as Head Facilitators!
*Please pray for the achievement of this goal.
*Please pray that other YWAM bases in Brazil will also adopt the course as part of their training programme.
We are still waiting for confirmation of another course in Goiania. We will also run a course in Pontalina with Pr Alexandre – participants will come from four different churches. This will help to create another Kairos base in Goias state with possibly another trained Head facilitator to lead courses.
Kairos is now in 31 countries worldwide being used as a tool to both bless and build and helping to launch new mission initiatives to unreached people groups. We are hopeful to see Brazil with one national team by the end of April 2009. This will leave us free to follow up and initiate other Kairos regional bases in Brazil and means we can work with a national team.
We recently welcomed Pr Julio, his wife + 6 other Brazilians from Goiania after several hours in immigration at Heathrow and helped them find the overnight National Express Bus to Edinburgh where Julio and Elizete visited their son, Reuel. We hope to spend some more time with them when they visit a group of Brazilians in Bishops Stortford at the weekend – snow permitting!
During Jan/Feb I have had some local supply teaching and Duncan has marked exam papers on line. We have also been involved in several Kairos UK events:-
A day in Luton meeting with Linda Harding and Dna Trainees. As last year, I will again be sharing our Brazilian and general mission experiences with a Dna Mission Track student in February.
Another day in Cobham meeting as Kairos South with course graduates and facilitators. Duncan and I did a training session upskilling facilitators with some of the new training given in Thailand. It was also an opportunity for all to share Kairos news, to pray for planned courses and to watch the new release, inspirational film, “Island Flame” which tells the story of the Koti people in Mozambique.
Jan is also helping facilitate a Kairos course with iNet churches in Sydenham SE London.
We are very pleased to be involved in Kairos UK and Europe whilst we are based here and are looking forward to attending a European Kairos consultation later in the 2009.
Thanks for your ongoing support and friendship. We really do appreciate the prayer shield and financial support. Please remember that we can receive tax efficient one off gifts and regular monthly or quarterly offerings via our Sovereign account with Stewardship Services. Forms can be downloaded here.
