Duncan and Jan Weir Goiania, Brazil 5th March – 23rd April 2009
Practical details: Pr Paulo Jnr, Sal da Terra had arranged for us to be met at the airport with a hire car at discounted cost from a church member– which was lovely and made us feel welcome and avoided the usual, initial re-orientation on our own. The hire car was an absolute necessity - without personal transport we would have been unable to do the varied programme which developed.
PJnr had arranged for us to stay in a shared, church owned apartment. This meant we were responsible for our own food BUT it helped us feel as though we were living there and not just house guests.
In the 50 days we were able to run 3 courses and do a lot of Facilitator training including training our first Head Facilitators! We spent time at the congregations of Sal da Terra- Paulo Jnr and Pr Marcao, CMA- Pr Julio and Elizete and Igreja Vitoria – Pr Robson, with a mixture of us preaching, attending meetings, evangelistic events, 2 weddings and other social events- eg.VIP church anniversary. We also had some very good conversations with the pastors re Kairos strategy.

Luciana, leader of DTS course at YWAM, is fully committed to running Kairos as the mission training at the end of the DTS 6 month course. We have been invited to lead another course in September/October 2009. Mario Jnr, YWAM base Director is very excited about Kairos and has a publicity power point to present the course to his contacts including other JOCUM base Directors in Brazil. He has invited us to a national JOCUM leaders conference in December 2009.
HIGHLIGHT OF THE TIME
Head Facilitator Training and hand over of all materials to Junio and Lorena- a very gifted couple.
HURRAH- a milestone for us !!!!!!! They are planning to return to South Africa in August.
Brazil National Team building! for South Africa team!
New opportunities- Pr Abidala from VIP, took us to MCM (a large mission training school and sending base) about 40 minutes from Goiania. Pr Omar of MCM very keen to have a CursoKairos with the next cohort of 50 + students in September. This could be an amazing open door for the development of Kairos in Brazil.
We also went to Brasilia- a visit with Marcel and his family – student at the River Church Kairos course February 2007 and facilitator at 2nd Goiania course August 2007. Marcel is very keen to see a course in Brasilia. We had an excellent talk with him re strategy + a visit to his pastor where we gave a presentation of course. We also did a Kairos Taster at the Sal da Terra church plant in Brasilia.
Pontalina- sadly Pr Alexandre was unable to arrange a course this time as circumstances had changed rapidly in Pontalina since Christmas. The previous church unity had suffered with some pastors having moved and everything changing; but he and Pr Guenevi are still working towards a course later in the year and have requested prayer for the situation in Pontalina.
Future – next steps- We areplanning a return to Goiania in September – to run a course at MCM and with ETED at JOCUM - + ongoing training of facilitators and hope of another course at VIP and one at Pontalina. We really want to make progress in setting up a Kairos National Team with key people.
