Worship Has Never Been So much Fun!

The “Jim Bailey Family Show” is a great afternoon out. An exciting and fun blend of music and comedy from performer, songwriter and comedian, ‘Jim Bailey’.

Guaranteed to have you up out of your seat. Jim’s sensational comedy concert contains fun for all the family. A show full of laughter, songs and audience participation. If you’ve already been to one of Jim’s shows then you’ll know the fun in store. If you haven’t, come along, bring the kids next door, you won’t be disappointed.

Jim uses lots of amazing and creative ways to communicate, The Best Instructions Before Leaving Earth (BIBLE). From the Hilarious “Spicy Camels Puppets” to his “Grandad” puppets with alternative ventriloquism! And even escapology. He brings a relevant and fresh Family Show that you and children will really enjoy and remember.

Workshop –

All age and children’s worship

Why have all age worship? Do children and adults even worship in the same way? A step-by-step guide to why all age worship is both biblically important and culturally relevant. How to encourage and equip not just children’s workers and parents, for all age worship but your whole congregation. This seminar provides not ‘the right way, to do it’ but lots of suggestions to help you plan all age worship for your church.

And!!

Visual and interactive teaching ideas

Do we need to be visual to communicate with today’s children and young people? Was Jesus visual in His teaching? Looking at the basics of how we learn, this seminar will help you gain an insight into being effective communicators with children. There’s lots of practical advice – some new – some nostalgic! So bring a pen to make lots of extra notes – you’ll leave inspired and buzzing with ideas.

Situation Vacant - Is this for YOU??

As Farnham ASSIST continues to grow, serving the needs of the Over 60s in our town, the need for extra volunteers increases. We want to reach out to more people and show them something of God’s love - particularly to those who are frail and housebound.

What does it mean to be a volunteer for Farnham ASSIST?

Talking to those who currently volunteer, it will :

* Be very enjoyable and rewarding (we have an amazingly high rate of volunteer loyalty and

satisfaction)

* Be a lot of fun (laughter is a very common occurrence!)

* Take as much or as little of your time as you choose (from two or three hours every couple of

months, right up to two days every week)

* Give you new skills or re-awaken existing ones

* Bring you in contact with a group of around 100 people, all of whom want to bring hope and love

to the older folk in Farnham.

What will you be doing as a volunteer?

It all depends on how much time you have available – let’s look at some of the current urgent needs. Please bear in mind that as most of our volunteer work is based on rotas, you don’t necessarily have to work every month or every week – the decision is yours!

Two to three hours a month

- Minibus drivers and escorts – as more of our elderly clients have difficulty in walking to our lunches, we use the Brightwells Gostrey Centre minibus to collect them from home and return them afterwards. Our drivers are an important part of our work and we provide one day’s training (free of charge) to all potential new drivers. The escorts are equally important in helping our clients on and off the bus and making sure that they are happy. (If you would prefer to drive your own car, do get in touch as we need car drivers too!).

- Lunch helpers – we cook around 130 freshly prepared roast lunches at our two venues each month, so helpers to serve meals (and help with the clearing up afterwards) are always needed. By the way, lunch is provided for all helpers, drivers and escorts!

- Helpers at Praise & Worship services – these 30 minute services are held in three venues each month (in nursing homes and a day centre). Our helpers assist in setting up the equipment, handing out hymn books and perhaps reading a passage from the Bible or giving a short prayer.

An hour or so a week

- One to One – We have immediate urgent need for two volunteers to visit a couple of housebound clients in the Hale area who have been referred to us by Waverley Social Care Team. This involves popping in to see them for an hour or so weekly (or at times agreed between yourself and your client), for a chat, to do a little shopping or perhaps to take them out. One to one is a wonderful way of building a strong friendship with an elderly person.

Two or three hours a week

- Praise & Worship service leaders or speakers – We would like to be able to visit more residential and care homes and therefore need speakers (to give a short 5 – 8 minute talk) and folk willing to lead our services. This important work is a real opportunity for witness to those unable to get out to regular church services. We are also looking at other ways of developing our spiritual witness to the elderly – do get in touch if you are interested.

- Understanding Computers tutors – Our weekly sessions at the Methodist Church are proving popular – if you are a competent computer user and willing to spend time on a one to one basis with our clients, we would love to hear from you.

Around twelve hours a week

With the continual growth and development of Farnham ASSIST, we have a new and exciting vacancy for someone to help our Coordinator, Brian Kurton, in the overall running of the work of ASSIST. Although the day to day content of the job will vary, it is likely to include taking over responsibility for one area of ASSIST’s work such as the lunches. This event is advertised elsewhere in the magazine, but this is a personal request from the FAST team.

If you can possibly help on the day, 9^th June 2007, at any time during the day, please contact Linda, Joan or Maggie on 01252 714414, we particularly need strong men to help unload and then reload equipment for Jim for the show.

Also if you know anyone who would be interested in this truly amazing, uplifting show at Hale School which starts at 3.30 and finishes at 5.00 please urge them to get their tickets as soon as possible, (same telephone number as above). Word of mouth is always the best advertisement!

Felt Making With

Potters gate school

The Fast Team are continually learning new skills!

After a visit to Wintershall to see the Stations of the Cross with Year 5, the Fast team were asked if they could find an artist to allow the children to make a record of their visit to display at the school. One of our volunteers Mair Thorburn, (a poet herself but that’s another story) suggested a friend of hers Jane Llewellyn would be a good contact.

Jane makes hangings, pictures, clothing and all sorts of amazing things with felt, using Moreno wool of the most dazzling colours.

So in groups of 4 the children first designed a picture of their favourite station of the cross, and then recreated it in felt. Each design is now waiting to be integrated onto a bigger piece of felt to make a wall hanging for the school. We hope it will be on display at the FCCT ARM and next Easter in Guildford Cathedral.

As an introduction the felt making Jane allowed the children and the FAST team to make a small felt cross so each of us has a very personal memory of a brilliant day at Wintershall, and of the fascinating skill of felt making.

Calling all ASSIST Volunteers!!

We really appreciate all that you do in so many different ways for Farnham ASSIST – without you, we could not continue. To show our appreciation, we are organising a special Volunteers Event on Friday July 13^th between 6pm and 8pm at The Lantern, St Thomas on the Bourne church. This will be a unique opportunity for you to meet volunteers from across all areas of ASSIST and to see and hear what ASSIST is doing around the town!

We will be providing plenty of refreshments for you to enjoy in a very informal and enjoyable atmosphere. The event is open to all volunteers and, if you would like to bring along someone who is interested in our work with the over 60’s, we would love to see them too.

Do drop in at any time between 6 and 8 pm – we look forward to seeing you!
