Update August 2007
|
Current Status:
Following the success of the first CursoKairos in Goiania run in April 2007, Duncan and Jan Weir return to that city later this month to facilitate the second CursoKairos. They will be training local facilitators from the first course and Marcel from Greenford, a UK based Brazilian who participated in the Kairos course run in Maidenhead earlier this year, will also be part of the team facilitating the course. We are looking for God to raise up a potential Head Facilitator from this group who could run a third course with Duncan and Jan working as mentors.
On the visit this August Duncan and Jan will also be spending a few days in Rio following up from the taster held there last April. They are then looking towards another trip to Brazil in November to run, hopefully, a third CursoKairos in Goiania; a first course in Rio; and, through other connections, a first course in Recife. This trip in November will be confirmed if at least one of these possible courses materialises. Beyond this a course in Sao Luis in March/April 2008 is also being planned; and we expect one to run in Criciuma in 2008 in addition to further courses in existing centres.
Revised Stategy:
Several factors have led us to revise the strategy outlined in the project update of May 2007. The major change is that we are no longer looking at Duncan and Jan relocating to Brazil in October 2007. This may still be appropriate at some future date, but we are now looking at them overseeing this project whilst being based in the UK and developing their role with Kairos here, in Europe and, as God leads, beyond. We believe this will help to strengthen their UK support base without compromising the vision of seeing CursoKairos released into Brazil. They can spend up to six months in any twelve month period in Brazil without visa complications and this strategy will also be less of a financial challenge. We also believe that this approach could challenge the Brazilian church to rise up and take ownership of CursoKairos sooner.
Future Needs:
These changes alter our budget projections, although some of the potential savings on living costs for Duncan and Jan are offset by the extra travelling costs that the revised strategy entails.

Creative Giving/Support
There are various possibilities for giving financial support. We are hoping for one-off gifts and regular support, even small regular sums make an enormous difference. Tax efficient giving can be made through Stewardship Services or World Outreach (see below). There are also other ways of giving financial support, for example:
- some items of equipment could be bought or donated; for example, video projectors are about half the price in the UK compared with Brazil, so one bought or donated in the UK would save money.
If you are interested in exploring these or other creative ideas, please talk to Duncan, Jan or Ron.
Personal support for Duncan and Jan can be directed through Stewardship Services (forms can be obtained from them – email janonwater@aol.com or downloaded Stewardship Form).
Gifts for the project can be directed to Kairos, Fred Shed, 45 Westfield Road, Burley, Leeds LS3 1DG. Cheques can be made out to Kairos but Gift Aid donations should be made to World Outreach and a Gift Aid declaration will be sent for completion.
Brazil and Beyond………..
We have always presented this project as Brazil and Beyond, Portuguese being the 7th most widely spoken language in the world. We now have enquiries about using the Portuguese version in Mozambique and with expatriates in South Africa; and we are seeking opportunities to take CursoKairos into Portugal. Several of our first cohort of CursoKairos graduates in Brazil have mission involvement, connections or interest in Mozambique and Angola. So, we anticipate the “Beyond” phase is likely to start during this two-year period as well!
