VULTURE FUNDS STILL CHASING MILLIONS
An IMF and World Bank report released this week has revealed that vulture funds and other commercial creditors are chasing a staggering $1.8 billion from countries that have received debt cancellation, through litigation claims in the courts. 11 of the 24 countries that have received debt cancellation under the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries initiative have been targeted by private lenders, more than half of which have already won lawsuits. A total of $991 million has been awarded.
Vulture fund activity prevents countries that have received debt relief from using it for its intended purposes - reducing poverty through increased spending on health, education, and other social sectors. Jubilee Debt Campaign is calling on the UK government to close the loopholes that allow these funds to operate.

A MESSAGE FROM JUBILEE SOUTH FOR DEBT WEEK
On Wednesday 17 October, people around the world will Stand Up and Speak Out against poverty, as part of a world record attempt on World Poverty Day. Ahead of this event, Lidy Nacpil from the Philippines, co-ordinator of Jubilee South, has sent a message to campaigners in the UK, which is ideal for reading out at Stand Up events, or at other times in debt week:
"One of the biggest challenges for the global debt movement today is to correct the perception that the debt problem has largely been solved. The majority of the peoples of the South continue to suffer from the injustice and staggering burden of debt. We continue to struggle for freedom from debt. We must aim for lasting and truly meaningful victories - measured in terms of how people are truly liberated and empowered to pursue a better life."
