Celebration Evening
 |
| Jane Still |
This year our 'annual review' at St Andrew's Church metamorphosed into a 'Celebration Evening'. We felt that this name more accurately reflected the mood of the evening in recent years! We also wanted to create a context in which all that were there, whether they were guests or hosts, felt that they were an integral part of the evening.
The emphases were on giving an opportunity for networking and using displays and presentations to inspire people to reflect on what God may be calling THEM to do.

Guests were welcomed with a glass of wine or soft drink to sip while they waited to register. Savoury nibbles placed around the church encouraged them to explore exhibits from the various projects supported by the Trust.
As the Chairman of the Trustees, I introduced the presentation by emphasising that the evening was a celebration of those whose projects are being supported by the Trust, not of the FCCT itself.
I spoke of the tendency of all young organisations to slip to the "default position of human institutions -in which structures proliferate, hierarchies develop, and a powerbase evolves". Going on to say "If we allow this to happen then we have no doubt that God will quietly slip out the back door. God is a still, small voice. He is to be found in the edges, in the wilderness - not in the palaces of Jerusalem. It is difficult keeping the spirit of wilderness in Farnham but we believe it is possible!"
"So tonight I invite you to open your ears to hear that still small voice. You will hear it in the joy and enthusiasm of those who are part of the various movements of the Spirit that are welling up, whether they are part of FAST, ASSIST, Options, the Youth Team, Parenting, or Explore. Is it speaking to you? Will you dare to listen to it?"

| Kirsty Bruton |
The new senior youth worker Steve Delves then introduced himself and spoke briefly about how he had felt called to Farnham from Birmingham. Brian Kurton introduced the new Deputy ASSIST Coordinator Kirsty Bruton.
There followed two presentations from members of the community: Berry Rance from the Citizens Advice Bureau and Jane Whittington, Headteacher from Potters Gate School, who spoke persuasively about how ASSIST and FAST have enriched the services they provide to the elderly and pupils respectively.
The presentation ended with two minutes of 'speed dreaming'. Members of the audience were invited to turn to the person next to them and to take a full minute each describing a need of the community in Farnham which they would like to address or which they are addressing. It was difficult for me to stop them! When we in the FCCT talk about Dreams and Visions this is the sort of thing we are talking about. We believe that God is calling every single member of His body to do something to build His Kingdom which will not be exhausting, it will be life-giving! Too often we do things 'in our own strength' because they need to be done. We try to shape ourselves to fit into a particular shape of hole. But if we listen we will hear Him calling us to do something which our personality, experience, training, etc fits us perfectly to do!
The evening ended with another 45 minutes for people to chat, look at exhibits, and eat dessert 'nibbles'. There was so much to see this year that many of us did not manage to see everything!

Night of Light
Wednesday October 31st 8:00-9:00 p.m.
In St. Joan’s Church, Tilford Road

PRAYERS - MUSIC SCRIPTURES
Followed by refreshments and fellowship
Halloween ('All Hallows Eve') the evening of 31st October,
is the vigil of the feast of All Saints -
the feast in which we celebrate the glory of God in His saints.
The victory of light over darkness
in the lives of God's holy ones in heaven.
Jesus is the 'Light of the World'.
The saints lived by that light,
and became a beacon in their own generation.
We too are called by Jesus to be the 'Light of the world' today.
Let Christians reclaim Halloween for God so that it is transformed
from a night of darkness, witches, ghosts and death,
into a great Christian festival once again.
We welcome everyone,
from any Church or none

And Archie came too . . . . .
Setting up the displays for the Celebration Evening gave us a chance to look back and reflect on all we have enjoyed this past academic year. Maggie, Joan, and I have bonded so well together and we have great fun planning exciting assemblies and lessons. We have appreciated so much working alongside so many people and have gained many friends.

Our assembly display table had Archie, our puppet, dressed as a Wise Man. Archie is a great
favourite with the children and we are reprimanded if we happen to forget him! Alongside Archie were several props we use at assemblies and also a file called "God at the Centre" which is the new collective worship guidelines for all church schools in Surrey.
We have had the chance to participate and lead a great variety of lessons and we displayed a few of the crafts and poetry the children have produced. Again we must thank everyone who has helped - including husbands who have carved wooden mounts for the children's tiled crosses and cut up turfs for Easter gardens!
Puppets were displayed on another table as we are delighted to be able to include Carol Harnett and her puppet shows into school lessons and assemblies. Carol has hand made all the puppets and is developing stories with them around bible characters.

Wall hanging made by pupils from Potters Gate School |
You may have seen the beautiful felt wall hanging at the entrance to our display area. This artwork stands in its own right as a stunning piece of group work by the Year 5 pupils at Potters Gate C of E Primary School. However there were weeks of preparation by the school, Jane Llewellyn the feltmaker and ourselves to ensure the success of the project and all it involved. Joan had produced a beautiful photo album of the project from beginning to completion which was on display. It was the first time we had taken a group of pupils to see the Stations of the Cross at Wintershall and found it to be a very moving experience. Following the Celebration evening, a few other schools have asked us to organise a similar visit.
We really enjoyed putting on an assembly called "This is the Star" which is one of our Christmas favourites. Great fun was had by the audience and especially by the participants as they donned costumes and animal masks and joined in enthusiastically.

| Silk painting Harvest pictures - a beautiful addition to FAST lessons |
So, thank you to everyone who has been involved in any way in FAST this last year. Thank you to allthe schools who welcome us in so warmly and the very positive feedback we receive. We are constantly developing new ideas - one of which has been silk painting pictures of fruit for Harvest which we will offer to other schools next year.

Pool and X-Box at the Celebration Evening
The youth team had a great time at the Celebration Evening, with lots of laughing, chatting, seeing old friends and making new acquaintances. Both Nicola and Chris felt the evening had gone really well, Nicola commented that she felt it was, "relaxed and well organised", and Chris thought the evening, "felt fresh and vibrant, with a new life about it".

The youth team had worked all morning setting up their area - even battling with the old stone church floor to avoid a wonky pool table - eventually succeeding! All credit to Gemma and Chris for getting the table there in the first place! It wasn't just pool that could be played in the evening but table tennis too - on the X-Box and the Battle of the Bands video was being played on loop. Young people had been invited from the different youthwork areas that the team work with and Gemma commented : "There was a real buzz about the evening, it was especially exciting to have the young people we work with helping us with the evening".
It was good to welcome Steve Delves and Rachel Deadman to their first CE and Rachel with her Dance Movement display seemed to be permanently busy! Talking to Steve after the evening he said, "It's a real encouragement to celebrate the work some of the Christian community are doing across the town. It was also a fantastic opportunity to network with others and share great stories of how God is working in Famham". I personally loved seeing everyone come together and enjoyed a quick wander around the church looking at the other teams' stands and displays. Let's praise and thank God for His goodness to us over the past year and wait in expectancy to the next!
Puppets in Assemblies and Lessons.
The FAST team have a new recruit! Carol Harriett has joined us to explore the use of puppets in the Primary School assemblies and lessons with the FAST team.
This is an exciting opening for Carol who for some time has wanted to use her skill with puppets in schools and churches in Farnham.
Last week we saw the first of these delightful puppet shows at All Saints School in Tilford, a lesson on Zacchaeus from the gospel of Luke was acted out by the puppets (worked by Carol and her assistants), and the children really enjoyed it! The next time it will be Naomi and Ruth!
Does the idea of working with puppets excite you?
If so, there will be a workshop to try to explore
a new puppet project in Farnham on
