Nail painting, singstar, foot spas, non-alcoholic cocktails, dance mats……. these were some on the things that were enjoyed at the GEMS launch party on Friday September 26th.

GEMS emerged as a response to the need we saw for increased opportunity and care specifically designed for and targeted at teenage girls. During the past year I have been thinking and praying about what that might look like, and if there were others who shared my heart for these girls. I was particularly impressed by the work of BLISS, a girls project initiated by Rachel Oliver a youth worker with Liquid Connection in Leatherhead. She has seen girls flourish in experiencing and celebrating life together. After talking with various women from different churches in Farnham a team pulled together to work on and help run GEMS. Together the team has written the following vision for GEMS.

GEMS provides a series of evenings and outings especially for teenage girls aged between 11-17 years living predominantly in the Hale and Heath End area of Farnham.

Our aim is to work with girls in mind, body and spirit. We want to help girls realise their
potential, worth and value. We hope to do this by providing a safe place where girls can learn more about themselves and others and a supportive environment where they can be encouraged, receive advice, have fun and develop as young women.

We aim to put on trips and residentials where girls can have opportunities to do activities away from home. GEMS hopes this program will provide an encouraging atmosphere to find faith and values within a Christian based ethos.

GEMS is part of ‘Cohesion’ which is part of the Farnham Christian Community Trust.

Our launch was in the form of a ‘girls evening’ which we plan to run once a month on a Friday evening. We had 44 girls from the local community turn up, they certainly kept us on our toes as we sang, played, ate, pampered and talked together. It was lots of fun!
As a team we are excited about developing different aspects of GEMS.
  • Advice evenings where we talk together about issues which affect them. This could be anything from body image to babysitting skills.
  • Trips and residential, giving the girls an opportunity to do something outside of the area.
  • Mentoring (one to one work)
  • Investigating faith groups.

The dates for next girls evenings are Fridays 24th October and 28th November.

We will be holding a GEMS trip on Saturday 13th December where we hope to go outdoor ice-skating and Christmas shopping.

We are still looking for a wider team of volunteers who could lend a hand occasionally at the girl’s evenings or on a trip or to share a particular talent you may have. For example, this month we have Jill Napper who is very kindly coming to help the girls make their own bespoke photo frames!

If you would like any more information on the work of GEMS please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Can you help establish a Stroke Club for Farnham?

What is a Stroke Club?

Every Stroke Club is different, and so Stroke Clubs can mean different things to different people. But in the main a Stroke Club is a group of people who have been affected by stroke that meet up regularly, and enjoy each other’s company while socialising, exercising, learning new skills or finding out how to live as full a life as possible after stroke. Many Clubs do all of these things, and some do plenty more besides.

Clubs can either be independent or an “official” Stroke Association Support Group.

Isn’t there already a Stroke Club in Farnham?

No, Farnham residents have to travel to Alton, Haslemere or Guildford which means that many people are unable to take advantage of the fantastic support these clubs can offer.

How is it to be set up?

The Churches in Farnham have excellent premises for such clubs which can be part of our mission to the community. The Stroke Association provides excellent “How to” literature but to get the ball rolling we need to assemble a group of volunteers who will be responsible for the management and running of the club. Volunteers are welcome from any part of our community and do not need to be associated with our churches.

What can I do ?

If you are interested in being part of a team to explore this further, and/ or know somebody who might be interested, then please contact Paul Fry (Rowledge Methodist Church) at paul.fry@btinternet.com or on 01252 794748 as soon as possible. The aim will be to have a preliminary meeting soon.
Please pray for God’s guidance on this initiative.
